Leisurely admire the East Pagoda celebrated for its Hakuhō beauty and the Yakushi Triad in the Main Hall

Founded during the Hakuhō period on the imperial decree of Emperor Tenmu, this is the head temple of the Hossō sect and one of the "Cultural Properties of Ancient Nara" designated as a World Heritage site. The East Pagoda, the only structure surviving from the temple's founding, is a magnificent three-story pagoda revered as 'frozen music' and has been restored to grandeur after undergoing approximately 12 years of painstaking dismantling and repair—a sight not to be missed. The Main Hall houses the Yakushi Triad, a national treasure and considered the finest example of Hakuhō sculpture. Gazing upon their serene faces naturally moves all three generations to clasp their hands in reverence. The temple grounds are connected by covered corridors with minimal elevation changes, allowing grandparents to stroll comfortably at their own pace. A detour to the Xuanzang Tripiṭaka Hall and Garden offers the chance to appreciate the grand Buddhist mural paintings by master artist Yasuo Ikariyama—history enthusiasts will find there simply isn't enough time to see everything.

Tips

Just a short walk from Kintetsu Kashihara Line's Nishinokyō Station, with the main office just 1–2 minutes from the station exit—exceptional accessibility. The temple grounds are level and easy to navigate with strollers or for grandparents concerned about mobility. Note that the Xuanzang Tripiṭaka Hall has limited open periods; check the official website in advance. There are many varieties of temple seals, so don't forget your seal book.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Visiting right after opening in the early morning means fewer tour groups and the chance to quietly admire the East Pagoda illuminated by the morning sun.
