Founded in 759 by the venerable monk Ganjin, who finally arrived in Japan on his sixth attempt to cross from China, this is the head temple of the Ritsu sect and is registered as part of the "Cultural Properties of Ancient Nara" World Heritage site. The Main Hall, with eight graceful round columns lined across its front, is a quintessential example of surviving Tenpyō architecture. The austere roof and columns create a profound stillness that envelops you the moment you step into the grounds. Within the hall stand imposing Buddhist images including the seated Rushana Buddha and a standing Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara. The Lecture Hall is a rare surviving example of a palace structure, having been relocated from the East Assembly Hall of Heijō Palace, and sensing this connection before visiting the Heijō Palace Site in the afternoon enriches your experience. Walking slowly through the temple grounds with your grandchild, hand in hand, surrounded by the beauty of moss-covered gardens, immersed in Tenpyō-era atmosphere—this is a temple that particularly speaks to the hearts of adults.

Tips

A straightforward 10-minute walk north from Yakushi-ji Temple, also just about 8 minutes on foot from Nishinokyō Station. The approach path and grounds have much gravel, so a baby sling or hand-holding is safer than a stroller. The wooden sitting statue of Venerable Monk Ganjin, a national treasure, is only viewable during special exhibitions around June's Opening-Mountain Memorial—plan your visit accordingly if you'd like to see it. The grounds have abundant shade, making them ideal for resting on hot days.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Visit in late morning directly after Yakushi-ji Temple to experience the serene grounds before midday crowds arrive.
