About this spot

A shrine dedicated to Emperor Jinmu, traditionally recorded in the 'Nihon Shoki' as the first emperor, founded at the foot of Unebi Mountain in 1890. The main hall was relocated from the sanctuary of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The expansive grounds span approximately 500,000 square meters and are enveloped in deep forest. As you advance along a broad gravel pathway, a dignified outer sanctuary with a hinoki-bark roof greets you. Fukada Pond on the southern side of the grounds is a peaceful waterside where waterfowl drift, and the towpath along the pond is perfect for a stroll before or after visiting. The flat, spacious grounds allow you to walk at grandparents' pace. As three generations savor the clear air of 'the birthplace of Japan,' conversations naturally flourish with historical topics.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Kintetsu Kashihara-Jingu-mae Station to the front approach. Admission is free, and there is paid parking near the grounds. The gravel pathway calls for well-worn shoes. Strollers can pass through, though they may be difficult to push on the gravel—hand-pushing is easier in those spots. The grounds become very crowded around New Year and the Kigensetsu Festival (February 11), so visiting early morning during regular periods offers a quiet experience.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The clear, refreshing air of early morning makes for a spiritually uplifting visit.
