Ride the mini monorail to the stalactite cave and view stalactite formations in the cool cavern

About this spot

A stalactite cave approximately 280 meters long on a highland overlooking Dorogawa Hot Spring Town, designated as a natural monument of Nara Prefecture and boasting one of the largest scales in the Kansai region. The unique access via the mini monorail 'Dorokko' from the base is popular—the gentle ride through the trees feels like a little amusement park experience. The cave interior maintains approximately 8 degrees Celsius year-round and feels refreshingly cool; the illuminated stalactites and icicle-like formations appear magical. After viewing the artwork nature has created over long ages up close, you can also enjoy a panoramic view of Dorogawa's hot spring town and mountain ranges from the plaza in front of the cave—a wonderful bonus. It's an excellent cool spot on summer afternoons.

Tips

Just a short walk from Dorogawa Hot Spring Town to the boarding platform. The monorail 'Dorokko' requires a separate fare from the cave entrance fee, so it's reassuring to bring cash (there's also a hiking route up the slope, taking about 15 minutes). The cave interior is around 8 degrees even in summer, so bring a light jacket. Some areas have wet footing, so wear comfortable shoes.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. The afternoon heat after lunch makes nature's air conditioning most welcome
