Come Face to Face with the Smiling Miroku Bodhisattva Half-Seated Statue; A Moment of Peace in the Quiet Main Hall
About this spot
A nunnery standing right next to the Dream Hall (Yumedono) of Hōryū-ji, traditionally associated with the Empress Anabe-be Mahito, mother of Prince Shōtoku. The principal statue, the Bodhisattva half-seated figure (National Treasure), is renowned for its serene smile with a finger gently placed on the cheek, and is famous worldwide as a representative work of the Archaic Smile style. Facing it quietly in the main hall floating on the pond, both adults and children naturally find their hearts settling. The Tenjukoku Mandala Embroidery (on replica display), said to be Japan's oldest surviving embroidery, is also worth viewing. In a space that is intimate and cozy, in contrast to the grand architectural complex of Hōryū-ji, this is a precious stop where all three generations can find a moment of respite during their temple tour. From spring through early summer, yamabuki (Japanese roses) bloom around the pond encircling the main hall, adding color to the quiet precincts.
Tips
It's located just next to the Eastern Precinct (Tō-in Garan) and Dream Hall (Yumedono) of Hōryū-ji, making it easy to visit in the course of your viewing. Since you remove your shoes to enter the main hall, shoes that are easy to put on and off are convenient. Admission is 600 yen for adults, and a discount is available if you show your Hōryū-ji admission ticket. The hall is a place for quiet worship, so it's reassuring to give children a heads-up beforehand.
