View the World's Oldest Wooden Architectural Complex; Five-Story Pagoda, Golden Hall, and Baekje Kannon—A Succession of National Treasures

A temple associated with Prince Shōtoku, traditionally founded in 607. The Western Precinct (Sai-in Garan) with its Golden Hall and Five-Story Pagoda standing side by side represents the world's oldest existing wooden architectural complex. In 1993, it was registered as Japan's first UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Walking through the precincts that have continued since the Asuka period brings the textbook scenes before your eyes, allowing three generations from grandparents to grandchildren to share profound emotion. The Great Treasure House (Daidō Zōin) houses numerous national treasures and culturally important properties, including the elegantly standing Baekje Kannon. There is no end to the sights as you proceed to the octagonal round hall and Dream Hall (Yumedono) in the Eastern Precinct (Tō-in Garan), and the spacious grounds themselves are a historical walk. The admission ticket is valid for all three areas—Western Precinct, Great Treasure House, and Eastern Precinct—so follow the route and tour at a leisurely pace.
Tips
About 20 minutes walk from JR Hōryū-ji Station, or a short walk from the "Hōryū-ji Sandō" bus stop. There is paid parking at the temple gate. The grounds have many gravel paths, so choose a route that is easy to push a baby carriage. Visiting early in the morning before tour groups arrive is quiet and recommended. The Savior Kannon in the Dream Hall is only open to the public during special viewing periods in spring and autumn.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 2.5 hours. The morning immediately after opening is best, when tour groups are few and the Western Precinct can be viewed peacefully
