Stroll through a pine and grass garden at the Kishu Domain's former watchtower promontory jutting into the sea

About this spot

A seaside grassy garden landscaped from the promontory called Banshono-hana, where the Kishu Domain once stationed a 'Tomi-Banshio' (distant lookout watchtower) during the Edo period to monitor ships passing offshore. Black pines spread their branches across this level garden encircled on three sides by the sea. To the front stretches the calm Wakura Bay, and on clear days you can even see the silhouettes of Awaji Island and islands beyond. The sense of openness is extraordinary. This area is said to be a scenic beauty praised in the Man'yoshu, and has served as a filming location for movies and television dramas. You can descend to the rocky shore near the water's edge, making for a leisurely walk around the promontory while listening to the sound of waves—perfect for an adult's holiday. Simply sitting on a bench and watching the ships pass is so pleasant you lose track of time.

Tips

By car, it's about 20 minutes from Wakayama city center with dedicated parking available. By bus, take the Saiga-zaki-bound service from Wakayama-shijo Station and get off at 'Saiga-zaki Yuuen,' then walk about 10 minutes. Have cash ready for the admission fee (¥600 for adults) as they accept cash payments. There are no sheltering structures in the garden, so don't forget a hat and drinking water. If sitting on the grass to view the sea, a small picnic blanket makes it more comfortable.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Early afternoon when the light is brightest is recommended. You can leisurely stroll the promontory caressed by ocean breezes.
