Climb steep stone steps and gaze upon Wakura Bay from the vermillion gate tower

A shrine dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the deity of scholarship. According to tradition, it was founded to commemorate when Michizane moored a boat at Wakura on his way to Dazaifu and composed a poem. As you climb the steep stone steps one by one leading to the gate tower and reach the top, a spectacular vista opens before you: the sparkling Wakura Bay framed by the vermillion-painted gate tower. The main hall, rebuilt by Asano Yoshinaga, the first castle lord of Kishu Wakayama, during the Keicho era, features beautiful Momoyama-period carvings and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, as is the gate tower. From the elevated shrine grounds, you can command sweeping views of Wakura's streets and sea, savoring both spiritual worship and scenic beauty simultaneously. Nearby stands the Kishu Toshogu Shrine (紀州東照宮), founded by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first Kishu Domain lord; if you have time, a combined visit is recommended. In the quiet shrine grounds, you can leisurely savor both the weight of history and the brilliance of the sea.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from the Gonngen-mae bus stop on the Wakayama Bus line; also about a 10-minute walk from Furou Bridge. The stone steps to the gate tower are quite steep, so use the handrails and ascend slowly. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The adjacent Kishu Toshogu Shrine is also atop stone steps, so allow adequate time and stamina if visiting both. Prepare drinking water before climbing.
