About this spot

Right by Oike Yuen Station on the Kishigawa Line, this free-admission park spreads out along the shore of the large reservoir called Oike (大池). The biggest highlight is the sight of the train crossing the red bridge over the pond. Watching the Strawberry Train or Tama Train chug along just above the water's surface from the lakeshore has made this beloved among railway fans as the best photo spot on the line. There are benches along the shore, perfect for a relaxed lunch spread out from your bento box. Trains arrive roughly every 30 minutes, so waiting for the next one while you eat becomes part of the enjoyment. In spring, cherry blossoms color the lakeshore, making it a noted hanami spot as well, a simple, peaceful waterside park you'll want to revisit in different seasons.

Tips

Just a short walk from Oike Yuen Station. There are almost no shops or convenience stores nearby, so pick up your bento and drinks around Wakayama Station before boarding. The classic spot for photos is the promenade along the lakeshore, and checking the train timetable in advance will help you not miss your photo opportunity. Restroom facilities are limited, so it's reassuring to have children use them early.

About 1 hour 30 minutes. It's best to spread out your bento around lunchtime and spend a relaxed time timed to the trains passing by
