Visit the ancient shrine of the wood deity and attempt the 'tree-trunk passage' for blessing against misfortune

An ancient shrine dedicated to Itakeru-no-mikoto (五十猛命), the deity of trees, said to be the origin of Kii Province being called 'the land of trees,' and co-principal shrine of Kii Province alongside Hichimi Shrine. The main attraction is the 'tree-trunk passage' (木の俣くぐり), passing through the hollow trunk of a great cedar, the sacred tree felled by lightning. Those who pass through the hollow are said to receive blessing against misfortune and calamity, and children can enjoy the sense of adventure. The verdant grounds are filled with the scent of wood, and there are many amulets and offerings related to the wood deity. Playful touches include large wooden sculptures of each year's zodiac animal displayed seasonally, making it a popular spot for family photos. This shrine, with its calm and warm atmosphere, fittingly concludes the three-shrine pilgrimage, leaving visitors with a sense of accomplishment.

Tips

Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Itaki Station. Note the small difference: the station name is written '伊太祈曽' while the shrine name is '伊太祁曽'—a fun fact for your journey. The tree-trunk passage is located beside the main hall; be careful of your head when passing through. Parking available on the grounds; goshuin stamps and wooden amulets are available at the offering hall. Check the train schedule for your return to Oike Yuuen in advance.
