One of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields: View the Fan-Shaped Paddies from the Observation Point
About this spot
Aragi Island, formed by a meander of the Aridagawa River on an alluvial fan with layers of large and small rice paddies, is one of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields and a signature scenic spot in Wakayama. From the observation point along the road, you can view the full expanse of the fan-shaped paddies straight ahead. The fields display completely different appearances with the seasons: mirror-like water before planting, lush green in summer, and golden ripeness in autumn. The agricultural and mountainous landscape surrounding Aragi Island has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, preserving traditional mountain village life. Since viewing is from the observation point, all three generations—from small children to elderly grandparents with mobility concerns—can enjoy the spectacular scenery comfortably.
Tips
Free parking is available along Route 480, and the observation point is just a short walk away. Remember that the paddies are the precious farmland of local residents, so view from the observation point and do not enter the fields. The season around planting time (May–June) when mirror-like water reflects the sky, and autumn before harvest, are especially popular. Weekends during peak season can see crowded parking. While the observation point has a railing, avoid getting too absorbed in photography and keep an eye on children.
