Learn the History of Wakayama Castle and the Castle Town Through Video and Diorama

About this spot

A history learning facility located at the base of Wakayama Castle within Wakayama Park, with a tourist information center on the first floor and a history exhibition room on the second. A large-screen video theater traces the history of Wakayama Castle and the castle town, while the meticulously crafted diorama recreating the townscape of centuries past captivates children. There is also a section introducing notable figures connected to Wakayama, including Tokugawa Yoshimune (徳川吉宗), Mutsu Munemitsu (陸奥宗光), Minakata Kumagusu (南方熊楠), and Matsushita Konosuke (松下幸之助). Visiting this museum together with the keep makes your castle town walk much more vivid and three-dimensional. Admission is reasonable at just ¥100 for adults, and the exhibition room is compact, making it perfect for taking a cool break in the museum after climbing the keep's stone steps.

Tips

Within walking distance of Wakayama Castle's keep, located inside Wakayama Park (bus: get off at 'Koen-mae'). The interior features flat, barrier-free design suitable for stroller viewing, and you can pick up a walking map at the first-floor information desk, which is convenient to review before afternoon exploration. The exhibition room on the second floor is compact and fits perfectly into the time slot before lunch.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Visiting after the castle keep tour and before lunch flows smoothly.
