About this spot

The central shopping street of Wakayama City with roots stretching back to the Edo period; the name is said to derive from the practice of merchants hanging goods "burakuri" (by hand) from shop eaves. Arcades including Nakabrakuri-cho, Higashi-brakuri-cho (東ぶらくり丁), and Kita-brakuri-cho (北ぶらくり丁) form a continuous streetscape. Alongside traditional Japanese sweet shops, dessert cafés, and old-school teahouses, young proprietors increasingly run trendy cafés and boutiques, creating a delightful mix of old and new. The covered arcade allows comfortable strolling regardless of sun or light rain, making it perfect for hunting snacks and souvenirs to close out a full day of walking. The retro streetscape is photogenic and offers a different atmosphere from the castle—a spot where families can experience the living spirit of the castle town.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Wakayama Castle, also walkable from Nankai Wakayama City Station in the downtown area. The arcade provides comfortable walking even in strong sun or light rain, and the flat surface is suitable for strollers. Individual shops often close in the evening, so visit interesting places early. Exiting toward Wakayama City Station is convenient for your return.
