Walk the 2.4 km tree-lined avenue and capture family photos in the green tunnel
About this spot
Along the prefectural road that runs through the agricultural park Makino Pick Land in Makino-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, approximately 500 metasequoia trees line the avenue in a perfectly straight stretch of about 2.4 km. This renowned spot was selected for the "New Japan's 100 Best Street Trees," and presents a completely different appearance with each season—spring's budding leaves, summer's deep verdant green, autumn's brick-red foliage, and winter's snow-laden branches. The conical trees stretching heavenward create a breathtaking green tunnel, making it an unbeatable backdrop for family photos. Walking slowly along the tree-lined avenue, you can gather fallen leaves and seeds in the dappled sunlight with your children, search for your favorite tree, and experience a much more impressive presence than from a car window.
Tips
From JR Kosei Line Makino Station, take the Takashima City Community Bus for approximately 6 minutes and get off at "Makino Pick Land." The free parking lot of Pick Land is available. As vehicles use the prefectural road, conduct photography and crossing safely from the sidewalk. During autumn foliage season's peak (late November to early December), weekends become very crowded; arriving early in the morning is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. In the morning, sunlight streams through the avenue in backlighting, and arriving before tourist crowds increase allows for peaceful exploration.
