Metasequoia Avenue (メタセコイア並木)
Flow of the course
About this spot
An avenue of about 500 metasequoia trees running perfectly straight for roughly 2.4km along the prefectural road that runs through Makino Pick Land (マキノピックランド), an agricultural park in Makino-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. Selected as one of Japan's New 100 Best Tree-Lined Streets, it shows a completely different face each season: spring budding, deep summer greens, brick-colored autumn foliage, and a coat of winter snow. The green tunnel formed by the cone-shaped trees reaching skyward is breathtaking, making it an unbeatable backdrop for family photos. Walking slowly along the avenue, you can pick up fallen leaves and seeds with your kids in the dappled sunlight or search for your favorite tree, experiencing an impact quite different from just viewing it through a car window.
Tips
About 6 minutes by Takashima City community bus from JR Kosei Line Makino Station (マキノ駅), get off right at the Makino Pick Land stop. You can use Pick Land's free parking lot. Since cars use the prefectural road, take photos and cross safely from the sidewalk. Weekends at the peak of autumn foliage (late November to early December) get very crowded, so an early morning arrival is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. In the morning, the avenue is lit with front-lighting from the morning sun, and if you go before tourists increase, you can stroll quietly.
