About this spot
A symbol of Toyō Park spreading along the shore of Lake Biwa, this castle tower-shaped history museum is inspired by Nagahama Castle, where Toyotomi Hideyoshi first reigned as a feudal lord of a single domain. The museum's interior features exhibits on Hideyoshi's journey and the development of Nagahama, as well as the history and culture of the Kōhoku region. From the observation platform on the top floor, a panoramic view stretches across Lake Biwa, Nagahama's streetscape, and Mount Ibuki. At dusk, the lake surface glows with gentle crimson, making it a fitting finale to your street walk. Toyō Park is also a renowned cherry blossom spot selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Destinations," and in spring, the castle tower framed by cherry blossoms is a popular photography location. After your visit, a leisurely stroll along the lakeside with camera in hand, savoring the lingering impressions of your journey, is the perfect way to spend your evening.
Tips
About 7 minutes on foot from JR Nagahama Station, about 15 minutes from Kurogane Square. Admission closes 30 minutes before closing time, so allow extra time if visiting in the evening. The observation platform can be windy; bring a light jacket for comfort. After viewing, a walk along Toyō Park's lakeside to watch the sunset over Lake Biwa is a classic conclusion to your visit.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Visit in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset over Lake Biwa from the observation platform.
