Drive across the 1.4 km bridge and savor the panoramic views from the lake

About this spot

Spanning the narrowest point of Lake Biwa between Moriyama and Katata in Otsu, this approximately 1.4 km bridge has been cherished as a symbol of Lake Biwa connecting east and west shores since its opening in 1964. As you ascend the gentle arch, the lake unfolds before your eyes—the majestic northern lake and Hira mountains to the north, and the calm southern lake waters to the south—creating an exhilarating panoramic drive that feels like traveling across the water itself. The lanes toward Otsu feature a special pavement that plays the melody of "Biwako Shukkō no Uta" (The Song of Lake Biwa) when driving at the speed limit—listening carefully together as you cross is a delightful experience. A pedestrian walkway is also available, allowing you to cross on foot and feel the lake breeze against your skin.

Tips

The Lake Biwa Bridge is a toll road requiring a 150-yen toll for standard vehicles. The toll booth has both cash and ETC lanes, so have small change or an ETC card ready for smooth passage. The melody road sounds clear when the speed limit is observed. Walking and bicycles are free to cross, so if time permits, the view from the bridge's pedestrian walkway is exceptional.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 30 minutes. Midday with clear air offers excellent visibility, with views extending to the Hira mountain range for a refreshing drive.
