Leisurely stroll along the lakeshore beach with white sand and pine groves
About this spot
The Nakahama area of the Omifumaiko beach along Lake Biwa's west shore, stretching about 4 km, where the contrast between white sand and blue pines is particularly beautiful. Counted among the Eight Scenic Spots of Lake Biwa as "the white beach of Oomatsu Point," the lake surface glimmering through the pine grove is renowned as one of Kansai's most beautiful sights. In summer it bustles as a bathing beach, but outside the season, a quiet sandy beach stretches out, and a stroll while viewing the mountains across the water is pleasant. Whether walking leisurely along the waterline, settling down in the shade of the pines for conversation, or experiencing Lake Biwa at eye level with the water—a perspective different from the bird's-eye view of the summit earlier in the day—this course offers unique pleasures.
Tips
Easily accessible on foot about 5 minutes from JR Kosei Line Omifumaiko Station; by car, there are parking facilities along the lakeshore (paid during summer). The bathing season of July–August is very crowded, so for walking purposes, early morning, evening, or seasons outside summer offer more leisurely strolls. Comfortable sneakers are recommended for the sandy beach. The pine grove provides plenty of shade, ideal for resting on hot days.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. The late afternoon when the lake surface shimmers in the light is pleasant for walking.
