End your day with the view of the floating hall on the lake and Lake Biwa at dusk

About this spot

A hall floating on Lake Biwa at Katata, the lake's narrowest point; formally called Kaigon-san Mangetsu-ji Ukimido. Legend holds that it was built in the Heian period by the priest Genshin Eshin to pray for the safety of lake traffic. As the backdrop of "wild geese alighting at Katata," one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Ōmi, it has been depicted in paintings and haiku since ancient times. The poet Matsuo Bashō also visited this place and left a poem. Crossing the stone bridge to reach the hall, you are surrounded by Lake Biwa, and the view from just above the lake surface is truly a prime seat on the water. At dusk, the lake surface glows crimson, a serene, spectacular landscape perfect for quietly ending a day that began at a terrace on the summit.

Tips

Accessible about 5 minutes by bus or car from JR Kosei Line Katata Station, with free parking available at the entrance. Viewing closes around 5 PM, so allow extra time if aiming for dusk views. Access to the hall is via a stone bridge. The surrounding area preserves the old streets of Katata, known as "Mizuho no Sato," and a light stroll is possible if time permits.
