The principal shrine of Kuwana, comprising both Kuwana Shrine and Nakatomi Shrine, affectionately known locally as 'Kasuga-san' (春日さん). The bronze torii gate at the shrine's approach was donated by a Kuwana clan lord in the early Edo period and symbolizes Kuwana, the historic center of metalworking. Beyond the ornate gate lies a peaceful precinct where you can catch your breath during your town stroll. The annual August festival, 'Ishitori Matsuri' (石取祭), is known as 'Japan's Noisiest Festival,' with floats ringing bells and beating drums as they parade through town, and it is registered as part of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in the category 'Mountain, Hoko and Dashi Floats.' A fitting place to quietly pray for safe travels as you walk through this historic castle town.

Tips

Free admission. About a 5-minute walk from Kyuka Park. Omamori (amulets) and goshuin (shrine stamps) are available at the shrine office, so bring your goshuin book. A recommended photo: capture the gate from the bronze torii gate angle. The nearby Ishitori Kaikan (Stone-Carrying Hall; free admission) exhibits actual floats from the festival—stop by if the festival intrigues you.

Allow approximately 40 minutes. Enjoy a leisurely visit to the quiet precinct in the early afternoon.
