Late Lunch and a Taste of the Local Specialty, Yasunaga Mochi (安永餅), in the Retro Arcade
About this spot
A charming retro shopping arcade extending from the gate of Kuwana Soja. On days ending in 3 or 8, the 'Sanpachi Market' (三八市), a tradition dating back to the Edo period, fills the street with stalls in a lively celebration. Kuwana's signature treat is Yasunaga Mochi (安永餅)—a long, freshly grilled rice cake wrapped with sweet bean paste. Savoring one of these simple, warm mochi while strolling is the perfect way to conclude your walk. Kuwana's location on the Kiso, Ibi, and Nagara river system makes it famous for clams, making clam dishes an elegant choice for a late lunch. Browse traditional confectionery shops and souvenir stores while soaking in the authentic atmosphere of life in a castle town.
Tips
Just steps from Kuwana Soja and a 15-minute walk from Kuwana Station. The covered arcade provides reassurance on rainy or intensely sunny days. The Sanpachi Market operates primarily in the morning and closes early; note the time if visiting on market days. Most independent shops accept cash primarily, so having small change on hand is helpful.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. Afternoon snacking and browsing is delightful. On Sanpachi Market days, mornings are particularly lively.
