Wander Through a Historic Covered Shopping Street Browsing Souvenirs

About this spot

One of Hokkaido's oldest shopping streets, with a history reportedly stretching back to the early Meiji period, this arcade spans approximately 900 meters from 1st to 7th blocks east-west. Souvenir shops selling confections and seafood, long-established specialty stores, and restaurants line both sides of the covered arcade. The roof overhead is wonderful for three-generation outings, as it offers protection from the elements. The 5th block is home to Honin Tanuki Daimyojinja Shrine, the street's guardian deity, where visitors can rub the tanuki statue for good luck and prosperity. The blend of old establishments and new shops creates a street where the grandparent generation finds nostalgia while younger generations discover something fresh. It's the perfect way to conclude your Sapporo walking tour, offering something for every generation.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from TV Tower; located 2 blocks south of Odori Park. The arcade is flat and easy to navigate, with plenty of restaurants for rest breaks. Evening can get crowded with shoppers, so agree on a meeting point beforehand to avoid separation. Long-lasting confections make convenient souvenirs to give as gifts.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1.5 hours. Early to mid-afternoon is relatively uncrowded and allows plenty of time for browsing and selecting souvenirs.
