Next stop: A roughly 6-minute aerial stroll to the summit for a grand panorama of Toyako Lake and Uchiura BayAbout this spot
A farm at the base of Showa Shinzan where you can observe Ezo brown bears, the forest monarchs of Hokkaido, up close. The bears in the open enclosure stand up and reach for the special cookies tourists throw, raising their paws or making pleading gestures—all are skilled performers of their begging acts. Cheers resound from various corners of the grounds as they skillfully catch their targets. From large adult Ezo brown bears to endearing young cubs, the bears are separated by age, making it possible to experience both their power and charm at once. Despite being separated by a fence, the distance to these bears where you can experience their true wild size is unique to Hokkaido and becomes an unforgettable memory for both children and grandparents.
Tips
Just a short walk from the Showa Shinzan parking lot, with the Usui Mountain Ropeway boarding point adjacent. Bear snacks (cookies) are purchased on-site, so having cash is reassuring. Feeding the bears involves tossing and is enjoyable even for small children, but adults should supervise to ensure no one leans over the fence.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Daytime when bears actively beg for treats is recommended. Stopping before the ropeway creates a smooth flow of movement.
