A roughly 6-minute aerial stroll to the summit for a grand panorama of Toyako Lake and Uchiura Bay
About this spot
A ropeway connecting the base of Usui Mountain to the summit station in roughly 6 minutes. As the large gondola ascends, the reddish-brown Showa Shinzan comes into view below, followed by Toyako Lake with Nakashima Island floating in it—a window view truly worthy of the name "aerial stroll." The summit station observation terrace has plenty of comfortable seating where grandparents can sit and leisurely enjoy the grand Toyako Lake panorama. Those with energy can walk the footpath for about 10 minutes to the volcanic crater observation platform. The view of Usui Mountain's crater, transformed with each eruption, and the shimmering Uchiura Bay (Uchiura Bay) beyond it, makes you acutely aware you're standing atop an active volcano. A perfect vehicle to conclude a three-generation trip by reaching the volcanic summit without strenuous walking.
Tips
A short walk from the same parking lot as the bear farm to the boarding point. The summit is cooler and windier than the base, so bring a jacket even in summer. The footpath to the crater observation platform has stairs and gravel, so wear comfortable shoes and consider dividing time between walking and resting at the terrace if needed. Operating hours change by season, so always confirm the last departure time before going up.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (round-trip plus summit exploration). Late afternoon offers softer light and beautiful views of Toyako Lake and Uchiura Bay.
