Showa Daibutsu was constructed in 1984 on the grounds of Koyasan Aomori Branch Temple, Seiryuji, in the Kuwabara district on the outskirts of Aomori City. At 21.35m in height, this bronze seated statue holds the distinction of being Japan's tallest, surpassing even the great Buddhas of Nara and Kamakura in scale. As you proceed down the cedar-lined approach, the massive Daibutsu suddenly emerges between the trees—a moment that takes your breath away. The interior can be visited, and the quiet space offers an opportunity for meditation and peace. Throughout the temple grounds, you'll find a five-story pagoda and other structures built with Aomori hinoki wood, along with abundant seasonal flowering plants and landscaped gardens. Nestled in a quiet mountain valley, this is a temple perfect for history lovers to explore leisurely.
Tips
About 20–30 minutes by car from central Aomori. While Aomori City buses serve the area, services are limited; a rental car or taxi is more efficient. Admission is required (adults ¥400). The grounds are extensive with gravel paths and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The approaches and gardens transform with the seasons—verdant greenery and snowy landscapes are equally impressive.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1–1.5 hours. Morning to early afternoon is ideal, when light illuminates the statue's features beautifully.
