Gaze Up at the Large Timber-Frame Building at Sannai-Maruyama—A UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site

At the core of the 'Jomon Heritage Sites of Hokkaido and Northeast Honshu,' this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site is Japan's largest Jomon settlement. Spanning from approximately 5,900 to 4,200 years ago, this area was inhabited during the Early to Middle Jomon periods. The symbolic large timber-frame building (six-post structure) and a reconstructed large pit dwelling measuring approximately 32 meters in length allow you to experience the landscape of a Jomon village firsthand. Standing at the actual location where cherry wood post holes measuring about 1m in diameter were discovered, you'll marvel at the construction skills of people who built such structures over 5,000 years ago. The adjoining Jomon Yushuukan features the 'Sanmaru Museum' displaying recovered flat clay figurines and vast quantities of pottery and ornaments. Joining a volunteer guide tour offers deeper insight into the site.
Tips
Approximately 20 minutes by car from Aomori City center. Adjacent to and within walking distance of the Aomori Museum of Art—visiting both is standard. General admission ¥410, which includes access to the Jomon Yushuukan museum. The outdoor site has limited shade; bring a hat and water in summer. Guided tours are approximately 1 hour and held at set times; confirm the schedule at reception.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours. Soft afternoon light makes for excellent photographs of the timber-frame structure.
