A roughly 10-minute aerial walk to the mountain summit park station, grand panorama of the tree sea and Mutsu Bay
About this spot
A large-capacity ropeway connecting to the Tamoyachi-dake Mountain Summit Park Station, located in the northwest of the Hakkoda mountain range, in approximately 10 minutes. As the 101-person gondola gains altitude, the vast tree sea of Aomori fir and beech forest spreads endlessly below, and turning around, you can see Aomori City and Mutsu Bay; on clear days, even the Tsugaru Peninsula and Mount Iwaki come into view—a grand panorama. Surrounding the mountain summit park station is a gourd-shaped boardwalk called the "Hakkoda Gondola Line" that circuits Tamoyachi Wetland, and even the short roughly 30-minute course allows you to enjoy the pools and mountain vistas of the alpine wetland. Offering completely different appearances with each season—fresh greenery in spring, alpine flora in summer, autumn colors, and frost flowers in winter—this is the classic must-see spot for Hakkoda sightseeing.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Kayano Highland to the foothills station; free parking is available. Operations may suspend during high winds, so check the day's operating status before heading out for peace of mind. The mountaintop can be nearly 10 degrees cooler than the city, so bring a light jacket even in summer. During peak autumn foliage season, expect lines of people waiting to board, so allow extra time.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours 30 minutes (round-trip ride plus mountain exploration). Early morning offers the best visibility, as fog is less likely to form.
