Take the Tsugaru Railway, Honshu's Northernmost Private Railway, to Kanagi for About a 20-Minute Journey

About this spot

The starting station of the Tsugaru Railway, with its wooden ticket gates and hand-written signboards, the retro station building is a must-see for railway enthusiasts—a veritable mecca. The Tsugaru Railway connects Tsugaru-Goshogawara to Tsugaru-Nakaori over 20.7 km and is Honshu's northernmost privately operated railway, known nationwide for its seasonal signature trains: the stove train in winter, the wind chime train in summer, and the bell cricket train in autumn. The old-fashioned hardstock tickets sold at the window further enhance the travel atmosphere. Board the diesel car affectionately called "Run, Melos," and the journey to Kanagi takes about 20 minutes. The window frames the endless rice paddies of Tsugaru Plain, and on clear days, you can glimpse the graceful silhouette of Mount Iwaki. Sitting side by side across three generations, swaying to the clacking rhythm—this is the true highlight of this course.

Tips

Located right next to JR Goshogawara Station on the JR Gono Line. The Tsugaru Railway does not accept transportation IC cards, so prepare cash. Trains run infrequently, roughly every 1-2 hours, so check departure times in advance to plan your itinerary. Seasonal signature trains operate during limited periods, so confirm details with the Tsugaru Railway information center.
