Kanagi is the birthplace of Tsugaru shamisen, associated with Nitabo (仁太坊), the master musician said to be its founder. This hall conveys the full history and appeal of that tradition. The biggest highlight is the live performance held in the hall, where the powerful plectrum technique, striking the thick-necked shamisen strings, captures hearts across generations with a sound pressure that resonates deep in your chest. The exhibition room introduces the shamisen's structure, the origins of Tsugaru shamisen, and local folk songs and performing arts, and taking the time to look closely greatly deepens what you'll listen for in the live performance. Located right next to Shayokan, this is a place unique to Kanagi where you can experience Tsugaru's sound culture alongside Dazai's literature. For the grandchildren's generation, it's a first encounter with a traditional Japanese instrument, and for the grandparents' generation, nostalgic folk songs, a time that resonates with each of the three generations in its own way.

Tips

Located across from Shayokan, and visiting both together is the standard approach. Live performances have fixed start times, so check the day's performance schedule as soon as you arrive. You can save money touring both with the combined admission ticket with Shayokan. There are periods in winter when it's closed or performances are suspended, so check the operating status in advance.
