Sprawling across about 80 hectares on the shore of Lake Ashino, this park is where writer Osamu Dazai is said to have played as a young boy. Renowned as a cherry blossom viewing spot and selected among Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Locations, the park has the unique charm of the Tsugaru Railway's tracks running right through it—you can watch small diesel cars weaving through the trees from up close, a sight that railway enthusiasts find irresistible. Statues of Dazai in his characteristic mantle and literary monuments dot the grounds, while the lakeside promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll. The vintage station building now houses a red-roofed café called "Ekisha" (駅舎), where you can take a break while soaking in the atmosphere of the old waiting room. Grandchildren playing on the lawn, parents photographing the train, grandparents visiting the literary monuments—three generations each enjoying their own pleasures make this the perfect finale to your Kanagi day.
Tips
From Kanagi Station, take the Tsugaru Railway one station to Ashino Park Station—the park entrance is just minutes away. Walking also takes about 25 minutes. Return train service is infrequent, so check the station timetable before beginning your walk. If visiting the café "Ekisha," note that closing times are early, so arrive early for peace of mind.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes. An evening lakeside stroll in soft golden light is particularly pleasant. Timing your visit to coincide with a passing train offers excellent photo opportunities.
