About a 15-minute walk from Aoike along the beech natural forest trail brings you to this pond, which quietly holds one of the clearest waters in Juniko. Fed by water welling up from the surrounding beech forest, its surface spreads in a clear blue-green said to rival Aoike itself. The spring known as Wakitsubo-ike no Shimizu, which wells up at the pond's edge, is a famous spring selected among Japan's 100 Best Waters, and its mellow soft water has long been cherished locally, even for brewing tea. In contrast to Aoike's flashiness, this spot draws fewer visitors and its charm lies in its quietness. In a forest where only the sound of wind passing through the beech treetops and birdsong echo, you can slowly gaze at the mirror-like water's surface. By the nearby Ochiguchi no Ike (Ochiguchi Pond), there's a teahouse called Juniko-an, where connoisseurs can also enjoy matcha whisked with water from the Wakitsubo spring.

Tips

The beech natural forest trail continuing from Aoike is well maintained, but there are tree roots and stones, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you continue from Wakitsubo no Ike toward Ochiguchi no Ike, you can loop back to the Kyororo parking lot. There are many insects in the forest even in summer, so insect repellent spray is reassuring to have.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes, including a walk along the trail. A morning forest walk with sunlight filtering through the leaves feels wonderfully refreshing
