Walk Along the Beech Forest Promenade to a Transparent Pond Where Mineral Water Springs

About this spot

About 15 minutes' walk along the natural beech forest promenade from the Aike, this quietly stands as one of the most transparent ponds in Twelve Lakes. Water springs from the surrounding beech forest and flows in, creating a clear blue-green water surface rivaling the Aike. The "Wakuttsubo Pond Clear Water" that springs at the pond's edge is also selected as one of Japan's hundred famous waters, and its smooth soft water has long been cherished by locals for brewing tea. In contrast to the elegant beauty of the Aike, this pond attracts fewer visitors, making tranquility its greatest appeal. In the forest where only the wind rustling through beech branches and bird calls echo, you can slowly gaze upon the mirror-like water surface. Near the nearby Ochiguchi Pond, there is a tea house called Juniko Hermitage (十二湖庵), where you can enjoy matcha tea prepared with the clear water of Wakuttsubo Pond—a treat for connoisseurs.

Tips

The natural beech forest promenade continuing from the Aike is well-maintained, but has tree roots and stones, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you continue past Wakuttsubo Pond toward Ochiguchi Pond, you can make a loop and return to the Kyoro parking lot. There are many insects in the forest even in summer, so insect repellent spray is recommended.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes (including forest promenade walk). A refreshing morning forest walk with dappled sunlight filtering through is most pleasant.
