Shirakami Juniko: A Scenic Drive to Aoike Pond and the Sea of Japan
A one-day drive course exploring the breathtaking scenery of Fukaura, at the foot of the Shirakami Mountains World Natural Heritage site. Start at Aoike, the symbol of Juniko. After catching your breath at its mysterious blue, as if ink had been poured in, walk the beech natural forest trail to Wakitsubo no Ike, where fine spring water gushes out. After taking in Nihon Canyon, with its towering white rock face, drive along the coast on National Route 101 to the roadside station Michi-no-Eki Fukaura and savor the local specialty, grilled squid. Finish up at Senjojiki Coast, a noted sunset spot, walking across the rock shelf that spreads out into the Sea of Japan. A day to greedily enjoy both the mysterious blue and breathtaking coastal scenery, perfect for a group of nature-loving friends.
