Vast Cliff of White Tuff Viewed from the Observation Platform
About this spot
A massive cliff where white tuff rock faces have been exposed through erosion and collapse. The name is said to have come from the rugged landscape reminiscent of America's Grand Canyon. Among the lush beech-covered mountains, the sight of white glowing rock walls standing out is highly impactful. Located near the entrance to the Twelve Lakes area, the trailhead can be found along the road toward Twelve Lakes from Route 101. From the parking lot to the observation platform is about a 10–15 minute one-way forest promenade. A light hiking walk brings you to the moment when your view opens to reveal the white panorama. In contrast to the mysterious blue world of the Aike, this is a dynamic white spectacle. Visiting both together allows you to experience the richness of landscapes at the foot of Shirakami Mountains.
Tips
From the Japan Canyon parking lot, it's about a 10–15 minute walk to the observation platform. There are uphill sections and unpaved areas, so sneakers are essential. After rain, the ground becomes muddy, so be careful. The view from the observation platform is most beautiful when sunlight hits the rock face, typically before noon.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes (including round-trip forest promenade walk). Most impressive in the late morning when sunlight hits the white rock faces.
