About this spot

A great cliff where white tuff rock has been exposed by erosion and collapse, said to have been named for its rugged landscape reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the United States. The sight of a rock face shining white amid the deep green beech mountains is striking indeed. Located near the entrance to the Juniko area, its entrance is along the way from National Route 101 toward Juniko. It's about a 10-to-15-minute one-way walk along a trail from the parking lot to the observation platform, and with a light hiking mood, the moment your view opens up, a great white panorama comes into sight. A dynamic white spectacle in contrast to the mysterious blue world of Aoike. Visiting it together with Juniko lets you fully appreciate the rich variety of scenery at the foot of the Shirakami Mountains.

Tips

About a 10-to-15-minute walk from the parking lot at the Nihon Canyon entrance to the observation platform. There are uphill sections and unpaved stretches, so sneakers are essential. The ground can get muddy after rain, so be careful. The view from the observation platform is most beautiful around midday, when the light hits the rock face.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes, including the round trip on the trail. Around midday, when sunlight hits the white rock face, offers the most impressive view
