Walk on the Uplifted Rocky Terrace and Conclude the Drive with the Sea of Japan's Evening View
About this spot
A vast rocky terrace coast said to have been created when the seabed rose during a major earthquake in the Edo period. The name is said to derive from a legend in which the Tsugaru lord once spread a thousand tatami mats and held a feast here. A flat expanse of single rock stretches seaward, with curious rock formations such as Lion Rock and Helmet Rock dotting the landscape—shaped by wave erosion. You can actually walk on the rocky terrace, peering into tidal pools and taking commemorative photos against the backdrop of unusual rock formations, offering an exciting seaside exploration experience even for adults. The area is also famous as a scenic spot from the windows of the JR Gono Line trains running along the coast, and the beauty of the sunset over the Sea of Japan is highly regarded as one of Aomori Prefecture's finest. In the evening, as the sky turns crimson and the silhouette of the rocky terrace emerges, you'll witness a view befitting the perfect conclusion to a scenic drive.
Tips
About 25 minutes by car north on Route 101 from Michi-no-Eki Fukaura; there is parking space along the coast. Rocky surfaces become slippery when wet, so wear sturdy-soled shoes. On days with high waves, do not approach the tip of the rocky terrace. Sea winds are often strong, so bringing an extra layer of clothing is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1–1.5 hours. Late afternoon when the setting sun illuminates the sea surface is most dramatic.
