Affectionately known as "Kasose Ika-Yaki Mura" (Grilled Squid Village), this rest stop along Route 101 faces the Sea of Japan. The specialty is undoubtedly fragrant grilled squid. The aroma of soy sauce wafting from the grilling squid lures many passing motorists. The sight of sun-dried squid hung in rows—known as the "Squid Curtain"—is a well-known seasonal sight in Fukaura and irresistible for photos. The farmers market displays fresh fish and dried seafood landed at local ports, as well as local agricultural products. The restaurant also serves meals featuring local seafood. A rest stop with a view of the sprawling Sea of Japan is a unique pleasure of coastal drives. You can take care of both lunch and souvenir shopping in one place, making it a reliable stop on the west coast drive.
Tips
About 30 minutes by car north on Route 101 from Twelve Lakes. The restaurant can be crowded during lunch hours, so arriving earlier is recommended. Depending on squid landings and weather, grilled squid may sell out on some days. A cooler bag makes it easier to take fresh fish and dried seafood souvenirs home.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. To catch freshly grilled squid, aim for late morning to afternoon time slots.
