Learn about Hachinohe's sea through touch tanks and squid exhibits at a science museum on an elevated plateau overlooking Kabutashima

About this spot

Overlooking Kabutashima Island on an elevated plateau, this fisheries science museum offers a comprehensive understanding of Hachinohe's sea. Exhibits include tanks featuring fish from the waters off Hachinohe, displays on squid which the area is famous for landing, and exhibits on black-tailed gull ecology. The touch tank where children can gently touch sea urchins and starfish is a favorite among young visitors. There's also a section introducing the deep-sea research vessel "Chikyu," offering glimpses into the vast world of the deep sea and Earth's interior. From the observation hall on the upper floor, you can take in views of Kabutashima Island and the Pacific Ocean, and it's enjoyable to look back at the island you just visited from above. A valuable stop on the Tanedasshi Coast walk that offers engaging activities even on rainy days.

Tips

Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Kabutashima Island; there is an uphill slope at the end. Bring a handkerchief or towel for drying hands after playing with the touch tank. Check the official information in advance regarding operating hours and days of closure.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. The museum is relatively uncrowded in the morning, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the touch tank.
