Walk the squeaking singing sand beach: a white-sand coastal stretch of approximately 2.3 km

About this spot

Beyond the Ashikegasaki Observation Deck (葦毛崎展望台) along the promenade lies the Osuka Beach, where white sand forms a gentle arc over approximately 2.3 km. Walking on the dry sand produces a "squeak-squeak" sound—this is the famous singing sand beach. Singing sand is said to occur only when sand grains are kept in pristine condition; the clear tone here is testament to the excellent natural environment of this coast. Walking barefoot alongside children to discover where the sand sings best transforms a simple beach stroll into a special experience. Picking up shells washed ashore and chasing the waves as they advance and retreat offer endless play possibilities. The promenade section also features seasonal seashore vegetation, allowing visitors to fully experience the rich natural surroundings of Tanedasshi Coast.

Tips

You can walk down along the promenade from the Ashikegasaki Observation Deck. If walking barefoot, bring a towel for drying feet; if playing in the surf, pack a change of clothes for children. This is not a designated swimming area, so avoid getting too close to the water's edge on days with high waves.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. On clear afternoons when the sand is dry, the singing sand produces the best sounds.
