Interact with Sheep, Enjoy the Sheep Show and Famous Soft-Serve Ice Cream

About this spot

Koiwai Farm, one of Japan's largest private comprehensive farms, spreads across approximately 3,000 hectares at the southern foot of Mt. Iwate. The tourist area within it is called "Makiba Garden." Animal interactions are hugely popular with children, including feeding sheep in the pasture and watching the sheep show where herding dogs round up the sheep. The farm tour by tractor bus with a guide offers views of production areas normally off-limits to visitors, and you can also see historic cattle barn groups designated as National Important Cultural Properties. After playing, take a break with rich soft-serve ice cream made from farm milk. The farm also features Jingisukan dining and restaurants, and families often relax on the wide lawns with picnic sheets. Even half a day isn't enough to explore this pastoral wonderland representing Iwate.

Tips

About 30 minutes by car from Morioka Station and about 15 minutes from Tohoku Expressway Morioka IC, with free parking available. The park is very spacious, so comfortable walking shoes and a baby stroller for small children are recommended. Hours and event details change by season, so check the official website before your visit for that day's information.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 3.5 hours. Morning is recommended when animals are most active. Timing your visit around the sheep show ensures efficient viewing.
