About this spot

A great Edo-higan cherry tree standing entirely alone in the middle of Koiwai Farm's expansive pastureland. It's said to have been planted as a shade tree for grazing cattle to escape the summer sun, and is thought to be over 100 years old. Standing tall against the backdrop of Mount Iwate still capped with lingering snow, it looks just like a painting, and became known nationwide after appearing in the opening of a TV drama. Of course there's the blossom season, but the tree's charm lies in showing an entirely different face each season: shining green in summer, golden pastures in autumn, and silvery white in winter. Since you view it from an observation area along the prefectural road, looking across the pasture, it's an easy stop even with small children in tow. Just a short drive from Makiba-en, it's a classic spot for family photos.

Tips

About a 5-minute drive from Makiba-en, with a parking area and viewing spot set up along the prefectural road. The pasture is farm property, so don't enter it; be sure to view and photograph the tree only from outside the fence. Parking gets very crowded during the cherry blossom season, so allow plenty of time when you stop by.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. Daytime, when Mount Iwate stands out against a blue sky, is best for photos. During cherry blossom season, early morning is relatively less crowded
