Japan's only amber specialty museum, located in Kuji, the nation's largest amber-producing region. Kuji's amber originates from tree resin from the Cretaceous period approximately 90 million years ago, and specimens abound with ancient romance, including amber pieces trapping insects from the age of dinosaurs. Beyond exhibits on amber formation and amber from around the world, visitors can experience amber excavation on the grounds (check for scheduled dates), and there's a thrilling sense of discovery as both children and adults excavate treasures from tens of millions of years ago. The shop displays accessories made from Kuji amber, perfect as travel mementos. Your day, which began with the culture of the sea, concludes with a luxurious journey back in time through the earth's geological history.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Kuji Station; located in a forest, so follow the signposts. Excavation experiences have limited operating dates and reception times; wear clothes that can get dirty and bring work gloves for peace of mind. The indoor layout features slopes and stairs, so move slowly using handrails when visiting with elderly family members. Plan with extra time as both the new and main buildings offer considerable attractions.

Plan for about 1.5 hours. If doing the excavation experience, arrive in the early afternoon to align with reception times.
