About this spot

Housed within the "Unosummai Tomos" complex in front of Unosummai Station, this learning facility was established to convey the lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake tsunami to future generations. The elementary and middle school students of Unosummai, through their own judgment, evacuated to high ground and saved their lives—an act widely known as the "Kamaishi Incident." The facility guides you carefully through videos, testimonies, and disaster-prevention learning, showing what happened that day and how the children acted. Admission is free. The adjacent Kamaishi Inori no Park (Park of Prayer) features name plaques of those lost, where you can pay quiet respects. Understanding this before visiting the stadium ahead makes its designation as a symbol of recovery resonate deeply in your heart.

Tips

Right by Sanriku Tetsudo Rias Line's Unosummai Station; about 15 minutes by car from central Kamaishi. Though compact, the exhibits are dense; hearing staff explanations deepens understanding. Visit both the facility and the Park of Prayer with a reflective mindset.

Approximately 1 hour. Visiting just before the stadium lets the recovery narrative unfold in three dimensions.
