Explore Old Ways of Living at an Open-air Museum with Thatched Farmhouses

An open-air museum nestled in a verdant valley within Tenshow-chi Park. About 30 historically significant buildings have been relocated and restored here, including Edo-period thatched-roof farmhouses from the Kitakami River basin, a waterwheel house, and the former Kurosawashiri Girls' High School building. Walking the village paths feels like stepping back into old Michinoku, with even the han-border mound marking the boundary between the Nanbu and Date domains still standing. The farmhouses with sunken hearths and fireplaces invite you to remove your shoes and explore—conversations like "people cooked here long ago" flow naturally between parent and child. The wooded grounds stay relatively cool even in summer, and gathering acorns and fallen leaves makes for perfect exploration for young children. Best of all, admission is free and welcoming.
Tips
Within walking distance from Tenshow-chi Rest House. The grounds have unpaved slopes and stone steps, making a baby carrier more practical than a stroller, and sturdy footwear is essential. Insect repellent is helpful in summer. Admission is free, but check opening hours in advance as they are reduced in winter.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1.5 hours. Early afternoon when dappled sunlight is beautiful is recommended.
