Learn About the History and Nature of the Kitakami River Basin in an Easy-to-Understand Way

About this spot

A municipal museum adjacent to Michinoku Folklore Village, focused on the history, folklore, and nature of the Kitakami River basin. The exhibits center on "Nature and Culture of the Kitakami River Basin," introducing the history of the river during its busy shipping era, the lives of people in the basin, and archaeological materials unearthed from local historical sites. Through models and original artifacts, you can truly appreciate how the once-vital transportation artery supported people's livelihoods. Exhibits of fossils and specimens of flora and fauna are enjoyable for children's eyes, and they connect beautifully with what you've just seen—the riverbanks at Tenshow-chi and the farmhouses at the folklore village. "Oh, that's what we just saw!" discoveries emerge naturally. Explore indoors with air-conditioning, giving your tired feet a rest while you learn.

Tips

Just a short walk from Michinoku Folklore Village. Closed Mondays (with possible changes for holidays), so check opening days in advance. The museum has restrooms and a rest area, perfect for cooling down between outdoor activities. The exhibits include adult-level explanations too, so parents enjoy it as well.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour. Use it as an indoor break during the mid-afternoon when fatigue sets in from walking.
