This is an exhibition hall for traditional kokeshi dolls located in Toogatta Hot Spring, said to be one of the birthplaces of kokeshi. Inside the hall, approximately 5,000 traditional kokeshi dolls and wooden toys, centered on the Toogatta style, are displayed from throughout the Tohoku region. As you compare the different facial features and body patterns unique to each production area, you'll find yourself drawn into the profound world of these simple wooden figures. In the craftsman's demonstration corner, you can watch the kokeshi-making process unfold firsthand as they work the lathe. The popular painting experience lets you draw your own face and patterns on a white-wood kokeshi to take home a one-of-a-kind piece. When friends compare their paintings, each person's individuality shines through, creating fun and laughter. The gift shop displays craftsmen's creations, making it perfect for picking up souvenirs and travel mementos.
Tips
Located just a few minutes by car from Toogatta Hot Spring town with free parking. Painting experiences take about 30 minutes to 1 hour and can sometimes be done on the spot, but if groups overlap you may have to wait, so contact ahead if you want to be sure to do it. Early afternoon after coming down from the mountain is convenient timing, and combining it with a meal in the hot spring town is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes (including painting experience). Viewing is more relaxed in the early afternoon.
