Next stop: Vermillion Torii Gate Facing the Lake: Prayers for Beauty and LoveAbout this spot
A bronze golden statue standing at Kasajiri on the western shore of Lake Tazawa—a true symbol of the lake. Created by sculptor Yasutake Funakoshi and erected in 1968, it depicts Tatsuko, the legendary maiden who, driven by an eternal wish for youth and beauty, became the spirit of the lake. Standing luminous in gold against the lapis-blue waters creates breathtaking beauty. The lake's high transparency allows the shimmering clear water at the statue's feet to become part of the spectacular sight. During backlighting hours, the contrast between the azure lake and golden statue becomes even more striking, earning it fame as Lake Tazawa's premier photography spot. Nearby, the Ukigi Shrine stands jutting into the lake, creating a popular composition capturing the statue, torii gate, and lake in a single frame. This is a must-visit highlight of the drive.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car counterclockwise along the lakeside road from Tazawa Lake Rest House. Parking spaces and a souvenir shop are nearby. When tour buses overlap, the area gets crowded—timing your photos for when the crowds thin is key. Consider visiting the adjacent Ukigi Shrine as well. The lakeside can be breezy, so bringing a jacket is advisable.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Morning hours typically offer ideal lighting angles, when the lake's blue and statue's gold are most radiant.
