Trace the History of Akita Dogs and Hachiko at the Headquarters of the Akita Dog Preservation Society

About this spot

The headquarters of the Akita Dog Preservation Society, a historic organization founded in Ōdate approximately 100 years ago that has protected the bloodline of Akita dogs, designated as a National Natural Treasure. The museum room inside is rare nationwide as a museum specializing in a single dog breed. Here you'll find an array of information on the history of Akita dogs, which trace their roots to Matagi hunting dogs, how they became the first dogs designated as a National Natural Treasure, and photographs and materials of celebrated dogs throughout the ages. Materials related to Hachiko, the loyal dog born in Ōdate, are also highlights. After meeting real Akita dogs at Akita Dog no Sato near the station, learning the history here will add great depth to your hometown walk of Hachiko's birthplace. A museum uniquely Ōdate's own—one dog-loving grandparents will especially want to explore thoroughly.
