About this spot
One of Tohoku's largest roadside stations facing the Japan Sea, named after the "nemu no hana" (sleep flower) that Basho composed about in Ogata. The observation tower on the top floor is open to the public free of charge, offering commanding views of the vast Japan Sea, Mount Chokai with its broad skirts spreading outward, and the 99 Islands with small islands dotting the rice paddies—Ogata's premier viewing spot. The product hall features an array of Japan Sea seafood, local sake, specialty confections, and other Akita and Nikaho flavors, delighting souvenir shopping for all three generations. The facilities also include a restaurant, light meal corner, and a hot spring facility overlooking the Japan Sea, perfect for a final rest to cap off your journey. At twilight, the sunset sinking into the horizon paints the sky and sea in shades of crimson, providing an unmatched stage for sharing the day's memories.
Tips
Located along National Route 7, just a 15-minute walk from JR Ogata Station, with ample parking. Note that the product hall and observation tower close in the early evening, so time your visit carefully to catch the sunset. Popular seafood items may sell out by evening, so secure souvenirs early for peace of mind.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Late afternoon, when the sunset sinks into the Japan Sea, offers the observation tower's best views.
