A drive-in located along National Route 47 in a prime position overlooking the Mogami Gorge, offering a perfect frontal view of the Shiraito Falls flowing from the opposite bank of the Mogami River. With a 124-meter drop, Shiraito Falls earned its place among "Japan's One Hundred Best Waterfalls" and is the most spectacular waterfall in the Mogami Gorge. The sight of white water cascading down the green mountainside like a single silk thread is truly like a painting. Matsuo Basho himself recorded the beauty of this waterfall in his "Oku no Hosomichi." The facility features a dining hall and gift shop, where it's customary to rest at the viewing area with local Yamagata specialties like tama-konnyaku (ball-shaped konnyaku) or soft-serve ice cream in hand. After viewing the waterfall from the boat above, you can now settle down and savor it leisurely—the perfect rest stop for three generations.
Tips
Located about 10 minutes by car from the Tozawa-han Funabansho on National Route 47 toward Sakata. The parking area is spacious and easy to navigate. Since the waterfall is on the opposite bank of the Mogami River, the viewing area offers the best vantage point. Shop and dining hours may vary seasonally, so visit early in the evening rather than near closing time.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. It's recommended to stop here as a rest after the boat cruise, viewing the falls in the bright afternoon light.
