Known as 'Tohoku's Ise,' this ancient shrine is counted among Japan's three great Kumano shrines. It is said to have been rebuilt in 806 CE and holds a long history. It enshrines Izanagi and Izanami, the divine couple who tied the knot, making it widely revered as a shrine for romantic connections. The highlights are the sturdy thatched-roof worship hall and three hidden rabbits carved into the sculptures behind the main shrine. It is said that finding all three will make your wishes come true and bring happiness—the moment the two of you lean together to gaze up at the carvings deepens your bond. A large ginkgo tree rises in the shrine grounds, and rabbit-designed amulets and shrine stamps are popular souvenirs. Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Miyanoshita Station on the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line, or about 10 minutes by car from JR Akatayu Station; there is free parking. It is said that the benefit weakens if someone tells you where the last rabbit is, so it's recommended that the two of you search for it together. The shrine grounds have stone pavement and gravel paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
