Seamless Stone Torii Gate and Views of the Hot Spring Town

About this spot

A park on a high plateau overlooking Akatayu hot spring town, known as 'Eboshiyama Senbon Sakura' (a thousand cherry trees). It is among Japan's 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots. In spring, about 1,000 cherry blossoms tint the mountainside in pale pink, but the fresh greenery, autumn foliage, and snowy landscapes each season offer their own appeal. The symbol is a seamless stone torii gate made from a single block of stone, said to be Japan's finest of its kind. Standing majestically at the approach to Eboshiyama Hachiman Shrine, the gate is awe-inspiring, and from before it you can see the Akatayu hot spring town, Okitama Basin, and mountains beyond in one panoramic view. Standing side by side with your partner as you take in the scenery will naturally spark conversation. This is a spot to savor the views and photos leisurely after praying for romantic blessings at Kumano Shrine.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Akatayu Station. You can also walk up from the hot spring town, but the path has slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. During cherry blossom season, parking lots fill quickly and surrounding roads get congested, so allow extra time. The high ground is windy, so bring an extra layer in cooler seasons.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Early morning through midday offers the best views and is recommended.
