Choose Your Souvenir Bottle at Tohoku's Oldest Winery

About this spot

Founded in 1892, this is a long-established winery said to be the oldest in Tohoku. Located in the Akatayu hot spring town, it continues to make wine from grapes grown in its own vineyards and by local farmers in Okitama, without filtration, allowing the grapes' natural character to shine. It is also known for its old-fashioned approach, including using sheep to clear weeds in the fields. The unpretentious flavor is rich with depth, attracting fans nationwide. The direct sales shop displays various brands, from casual 'mixed wine' blends to limited offerings from their own vineyards. Browsing labels is itself a pleasurable experience. As a memento of your visit to the shrine for romantic blessings, choose a bottle to open at your table and take it home.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Akatayu Station; it is within walking distance down the slope from Eboshiyama Park. When touring by car, the driver must not taste wines, so decide on a designated driver beforehand. Wine is sensitive to high temperatures, so a cooler bag is helpful in summer. Check business days and hours in advance to be sure.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The calm afternoon hours after lunch are ideal for browsing unhurriedly.
